I was filled with delight and happiness - not necessarily for wondering what I had done (if anything) to earn my spot on the page - but more so, because the glorious memories I had of Haystack washed over me.

In the words of Stuart Kestenbaum, Haystack "represents a remarkable confluence of nature, design and creative process." 'Indeed' is the only word I can add to a perfectly stated comment.

Life and it's responsibilities sometimes pull us from the things we really enjoy doing - in my case, pottery & teaching. The challenge of finding the time to create is always present as I move through my busy life. But the universe has subtle and surprising ways of reminding us to do what we know we have been put on earth to accomplish. Viewing the photo of myself and recognizing "joy" was like a gentle finger tapping me to say "make the time and nourish the soul."

I thank the universe and Haystack for my once in a life time experience - and the sweet reminder that came two years later.

The Art of Hand Picking Great Teas & Hand-Made Pottery Blend Together

Recently opened on Morton Street in the West Village of New York, is a Parisian style cafe & tea shop filled with the finest teas selected from around the world. Inspired by nature and beautiful gardens, which are a work of art themselves, I came up with the idea for the following workshop:

Garden Whimsy
Wednesday, August 24
9:30 am – 1:30 pm
04-AR10G-11
Instructor: Kerith Creo
Create your own clay features to enhance the beauty and originality
of your outdoor garden! The instructor will teach and
demonstrate handbuilding skills necessary to craft a beautiful
hanging bird feeder, clay flowers to mask the tough-to-grow
spots, or a beautiful birdhouse. All materials included. Return to
pick up glazed work.
Fee: $60
Fee w/ Member Discount: $45

Also I am very happy and thankful to those that appreciate and have bought my work - in the last few weeks I have sold nearly 25 pieces out of Wildflowers Too Gallery. Be sure to stop by to see new works put in the gallery every week.

Flattery from A-far

Today I received a lovely morning message in my in-box. It's very flattering to be recognized for our hard efforts, especially when the author (a stranger to me) has included my work in the company of some of history's finest potters - such as Lucie Rie, early 17th C. Japanese Potters, Otto Naztler- whose work is held in museums around the world for his brilliant glazes and John Britt, a published author on successful oxidation firing.
Of thousands of images on-line I am thankful and humbled to be highlighted in such fine company as a great example of oxidation fired pottery.

Lee's work is beautiful so be sure to visit her web-site and if on the west coast pay a visit to her studio on the Olympic Peninsula.

Hi Kerith

Just wanted to let you know that I featured one of your beautiful teapots on my blog today. Inside the gallery visitors will find paintings, glass, photography, pottery and more. I am very excited to be the only potter whose work is displayed tastefully throughout the gallery mixed in good company with the work of many talented artists.

Clay Times at PS 101 in NYC (pt.4)

The beautiful child who worked diligently and patiently to create this precious flower vase for his Mother's Day gift...an original.

<img style="MARGIN: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; I have been teaching kids of all ages in the tri-state area for nearly 5 years. Teaching children is a great joy and poses different challenges & perks then working with adults.
A fair observation built on teaching hundreds of students - children & adults alike - is that as humans we often become more critical of ourselves and sadly, sometimes each other - taking it all too seriously. Our ability to jump in with free abandon wanes as the years roll by. Luckily, not the case with most 5 year olds!

I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to teach the arts & enjoy silliness all in the same moment. My young students are a great reminder of how we should approach life...energized with insatiable curiosity and spiritedness.......one moment at a time.

Fun Times with the students of PS101

I had a wonderful day with the kids of New York's Public School 101! The students ranged in age from 4 - 12 years old and were so much fun to teach. With the older children we took on the challenge of making fun & scary masks that can be hung on the wall to enjoy. The younger students did a great job of working with clay to create bowls, cups, or as in one case, nearly 65 mini men! The ultimate high for a potter is when the magic and mixology of experience, skill and luck collide to deliver a divine piece, one that you know is ever so hard to reproduce - such is the case with the dramatic and intense ruby red platter I was gifted from the Kiln Gods a few months back.
The color - "Copper Red" is an elusive beauty. For every 50 pieces you put in the reduction kiln you may be lucky to have just one turn out with the delicious and desired color of red. Yet, even with these challenging odds I find myself time after time selecting this fine color with fingers crossed the color will "perform" and outshine the competition.

"Red" - the color of Fire and Blood, Passion, Desire, Danger and Love. Is there a finer color in all the world's color wheel? For some yes, but once you have opened the doors of the kiln and found your beauty sat on the shelf in its rich strength there is no turning back. Strive, strive and strive again I will........always Chasing the Dragon.

Summer Workshops

This summer I am thrilled to be teaching several workshops at the Long Beach Island Foundation of Arts and Sciences. I have had wonderful opportunities to teach hundreds of people from all walks of life from first time beginners to the advanced potter, all age groups from 4 years old to 80 years old, different learning levels, mentally handicapped, autistic children as well as teaching large groups in a celebratory atmospheres - birthday gatherings, bachelor parties, anniversaries and corporate events.
Truthfully, in all the time I have taught I have enjoyed every moment. The feedback has been extremely positive and I am grateful to somehow have found the ability to teach in a clear, creative and inspiring way. The best part about teaching is that it has made me a better potter and challenged me in my own work and how I approach it. As much as I teach, I learn from all the students who sit in front of me on the potter's wheel.
Following is some of the recent feedback (as well as some from other students) I received from a group of art teachers I taught in a one day workshop.

"Kerith Creo is a wonderful clay instructor. She is clearly talented and conveys information in an easy to understand manner. Her throwing class was a lot of fun and I learned quite a bit in a relatively short time. She was very patient with everyone regardless of their ability level going into the class. I would recommend Kerith's class to anyone who is interested in learning to throw clay from an accomplished instructor."

Joan Richie, Art Educator

"I just have to say that I had a great time at the workshop because I really enjoyed your class. I have worked with many different clay instructors over the years, but I learned more from you in 3 hours than all of those other classes combined. You have a unique style - a way of getting through to your students that is genuine, thorough, and kind. I not only feel more confident about my limited clay skills, but you gave me tools and ideas to use with my own students in the art room - and some very useful tricks to help keep them on task and feeling confident - which is what keeps students of all ages on the road to success. So thank you, for sharing your knowledge, your time, and your ability to encourage and inspire. At the time we had just found out that we were pregnant and it wasn't until we recently picked up our pieces almost 2 years later (beyond embarrassing) that we were able to look back and think about how special the artwork we made together was/is. Kerith was a pleasure to work with and she was patient with us during the creative process. We
are excited to take our daughter to the Mud, Sweat and Tears studio to create some beautiful pieces that we will be able to enjoy as a family for years to come.

Nan Sue Marsh

"Kerith possesses a unique ability to really connect with children, as she did with my 7 year old son. It was his first time using the potter's wheel and she exhibited a perfect balance of patience, guidance, and encouragement. She was able to help inspire him to create with a gentle hand. She's a true artist who is so open to sharing her talents, that people can truly find the artist within themselves."

John Sprei

Surface Tension

I have previously mentioned that often, clay represents visual metaphors in life. It is my selected medium and it is the best way I know how to express all that I experience in life...the good, the bad and the ugly.
Lately, I have been playing with the idea of "surface tension" - the tension that can inhabit both our clay and our lives. The contradiction of what is happening on the inside of both vessel and mind can be very different from what is shown to the world. Pushing limits, stretching ourselves to points we couldn't imagine, compromising our very being and sometimes temporarily having to give over to being someone other than our "true or desired self" can produce such tension as to produce millions of tiny cracks. The cracks can be both beautiful and ugly - but none the less, they are there to deal with - and even with those cracks we must find a way to stay whole and together lest the whole "vessel", "person" fall apart.
The images of the pieces were created by working while the piece was freshly thrown and very wet on the inside - the outside I treated to a fast drying making for a piece very different on the inside and out. Like a human our insides being, warm and fleshy, soft, and very much alive yet on the outside, our skin represented to world so to speak, taking the disappointments of life bravely - our shell, our skin toughened to a point of dried leather - always protective, sometimes tough and looking quite different than if we could see like a razor sharp beam straight into the heart of human.
In this tension and contradiction I find beauty. It reminds me to listen in carefully, to know when to stop pushing and to know when it is OK to push harder. My hands doing all the work I really don't need my eyes to know. The intuitive nature of all things...and more importantly simply to think of nature.
When I viewed the pots from a distance I saw an earth, scorched and tried, used and taken advantage of, desperately trying to stay a whole while little was being given back to replenish - no drop of water to return the outside of the pot to a soft and flexible being, hands continuing to push the pot to a near point of fracture so great it would determine the end of the very organic alive state it was existing in. Had I pushed further it would have turned into something else...and I too would have been someone else.
Art has always been available to teach us things about ourselves, others, nature and all that makes up beautiful earth. Knowing limits, knowing patience, knowing listening, knowing intuition and knowing acceptance are all here to serve us on a journey of hopefully more peaceful warriors.
For now, I'm keeping a bit of my leathery skin and staying as soft on the inside as I can. It will be the viewer of the "pot" and of myself who determines if this work of art has struck the perfect balance of contradiction and surface tension.

Coffee Time

Artists are constantly working with their hands...furiously creating. After years of getting a piping hot cup of coffee only to set it down to grow cold because the clay demanded my attention, I figured why not make myself a lidded-coffee mug? Eureka! Granted this solution was not Archimedes discovering the method for determining purity of gold but, it was a simple and welcomed solution to keeping coffee & tea hot. Another welcomed note was that my vessel would not be a tacky Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts traveling man mug...it would possess integrity and have a much more pure intention, - the determined intention I transferred from hand to wet clay on the wheel as I happily created a bunch of swirling and spinning mugs.
The strange thing is for years I drank coffee and tea out of a silly non-descript Christmas mug that I am sure was mass produced somewhere in China - my own home lacked decent hand-made coffee cups. This was a rather pathetic and embarrassing point I had to admit. I have since made ammends and corrected such an abhorent situation - my home is currently filled with mugs made by fellow potters and friends from around the globe. Each morning I start my day drinking out of a well crafted vessel I find beautifully functional. I think of the potters I have met and shared time in the studio with both creating and learning. I think how grateful I am for the simple morning ritual...a cup of hot coffee...

Potters for Prosperity

I am in the beginning stages of launching a non-profit event "Potters for Prosperity". In light of the challenging economic conditions many nations face, particularly of late Haiti and Chile with the catastrophic events of natural disaster the seed has been born as an artist and "potter" to assist.
Our first event will be the "Throw Off" with many studios participating in an evening of creativity, humanitarian effort, spiritedness and our contribution to global generosity and peace. Additional information will follow so that you may be a part of this event and "place your bet" live and in person on the artist who throws the most bowls in one evening! Your up-front purchase of one "bowl" - the symbol of food, family, and plentifulness will help support others that face great challenge simply to survive! We look forward to your support.

Winter and Potting in the Caribbean

While the Northeast has been getting their fair share of blustery chill and snow I have been enjoying life in the Caribbean. I have often seen my work with clay and the nature of it as a metaphor for life...there are many stages to go through before we reach "success" and often we have to be prepared for the cracks and disappointments that can arise both in the kiln and in life, alike. Sometimes the key is to stay flexible and purely imaginative. Being willing to stay open to surprise will sometimes produce a unique delight.
This piece was one I had intended to be "something". Initially as I sat at my wheel looking at the beginning stage of what I deemed a disappointment, a conversation started to happen or rather a few simple words - "Moroccan Carnivale". The piece went from looking like an un-balanced and boring genie bottle to something much more lively - the fish going round and round concealing the "evil eye" to ward off dangers and dark spirits, the rings for a circus like gaiety. I imagine I am influenced by potters who potted a thousand years before me...the conversation and spirit of the ancient art of clay yet again passed through my hands and in the end I too was surprised.

Firing with a Master

Spending time with the Master Potter, Jack Troy was certainly a highlight. We worked with what we had in terms of a fairly challenged kiln but along with artist, Mark Walnock we got some results by the second firing - a photo of the results is included I wonder if I will still be happily potting as Mr. Troy when I am in my seventies...

"COLD SOULS" clip on Conan O'Brien Show

This is a clip from the movie "Cold Souls" which stars Paul Giamatti. The intensity of the place - the studios located a stones throw from the mighty ocean, the architecture and the residential buildings like tree houses nestled in the pines, the sounds of nature all creating a haven for artists to explore true creativity. There is a great freedom to explore new ideas and a wonderful community that nourishes us each day supporting our artisit visions. Glassblowers, wood workers, potters, painters and poets all joined together in creative harmony - working diligently, laughing heartily and sharing generously...a gem of a place.

A few photos to share.

The first photo is me inside the kiln as we get ready for our second salt firing - the first firing was amazing and I suspect the second will be even better. The kiln will be packed with the works of many hands, then fired to intense heats and the salt will be thrown to add the final bit of surprise to the finished pots - Can't Wait!!! Check back for the results...

The other image is the glorious view I was lucky enough to take in everyday.....aaaaaaaaaaahh.

Thankful to have been awarded a scholarship to Haystack!

Studios remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week while workshops are in session.
Haystack Mountain School of Crafts is an international craft school located on the Atlantic Ocean in Deer Isle, Maine. Even more exciting is my collaboration with dear friend and super talented artist Richard J. Bailey - I hope those who are able will head to ARTOMATIC to check out some of our work, as well as hundreds of other artists. Richard created a brilliant series of illustrations titled "Strangelets" that will framed up by perfectly unique pieces of mine - each ceramic frame has been inspired differently based upon the illustration. The collaboration is a welcomed blending of our aesthetic styles, rich madness of mind, and a firm commitment in our belief to create art, sometimes with much loved friends. The process of creating the slightly distressed frames was one inspired by antique lace, things Edwardian, fragility of certain material objects, beauty and of course a bit of dark humor.

A small sampling of the "stage" Richard's illustrations will be set upon is posted. To see the final collaboration you will have to visit ARTOMATIC 2009.

PUMA Commercial Shoot

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331491504056780722" style="FLOAT: left;
